County Police Arrest Silver Spring Man for Drugs, Gun Offenses

County police officers from the 3rd District have arrested a Silver Spring man for offenses including possession of drugs, possession of a firearm by a person less than 21 years of age and possession of a stolen handgun.

Elijah Nyamekye, age 20, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped at about 6:30 p.m. around Georgia Avenue and Spring Street for multiple traffic violations.

“Officers detected the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and observed evidence in the vehicle and on the occupants that indicated the three individuals were distributing drugs,” according to a press release. “This evidence included a scale, marijuana, cash, and a small bag commonly used to package drugs for sale.”

Officer detained Nyamekye and found a loaded handgun in his waistband and cocaine is his pants pockets. Officers determined the gun had been stolen.

Nyamekye also had an arrest warrant from another Maryland jurisdiction. He is currently being held without bond.

In addition, the department said an investigation into the other occupants’ possible involvement in the crimes is ongoing.
