Dog Haus Biergarten Buildout Underway

Buildout is underway at the upcoming Dog Haus Biergarten location in Downtown Silver Spring, as the restaurant moves toward what local franchise owner Faizan Khan says will be an opening in May/June of this year.

We reported in January that Dog Haus Biergarten will open in Downtown Silver Spring, according to web reports confirmed by Laurie Yankowski, regional director, marketing for The Peterson Cos.

The restaurant, which specializes in gourmet hot dogs, sausages and burgers, will be located at 933 Ellsworth Dr. in the space formerly occupied by Lebanese Taverna, which moved to 8535 Fenton Street.

The Silver Spring outlet will be the third for franchise owner Faizan Khan. He opened his first Dog Haus in Bethesda in 2018 and a second in Gaithersburg in January 2020.

“Before we even started, I was researching a number of concepts and Dog Haus really stood out for me,” Khan said about his choice of franchise. “The food is all done by Food Network celebrity chefs in a partnership so it tastes really, really good. And I really like the culture of Dog Haus, the vibe, the industrial side of things and the way they really nourish their brand.”

Dog Haus first opened in 2010 in Pasadena, Calif. and began franchising in 2013. Currently, there are 35 restaurants open with 14 more “coming soon” and more than 130 locations sold to franchisees, according to the company website.

The menu features dogs, sausages and burgers, as well as plant-based options with a variety of toppings. For example, the Thai Fighter includes spicy Thai currywurst, wild arugula, pickled jalapenos and spicy basil aioli, while the Downtown is a smoked bacon-wrapped dog, caramelized onions, pickled peppers, mayo, mustard and ketchup.

There are also limited-time special offers, Khan said. Currently, the offer is Sam The Cooking Guy’s Mr. Miyagi features a deep-fried all-beef dog, caramelized onions, mayo, teriyaki sauce, tempura crumbles and wasabi furikake. It is served on grilled King’s Hawaiian roll, as are all the offerings.

Khan said he chose the Silver Spring location based on a demographic analysis and his broker’s recommendation.

“Just the location looked great,” he said. “It’s a corner spot and I really like what Peterson is going to do to Downtown Silver Spring in terms of that revamping of the whole square and really, everything that they’re putting into it. I feel really good about it.”

“We’re thrilled to welcome Dog Haus to Downtown Silver Spring,” Yankowski said in an email to the Source. “They will be a great addition to the area.”
