Bump ‘n Grind Closing East-West Highway Location on May 26

Bump ‘n Grind will be closing its location at 1200 East-West Highway on Wednesday, May 26, according to an email announcement from owner David Fogel.

The shop will move its operations to Moorenko’s Ice Cream on Georgia Avenue, and plans are still on track to open a kiosk at the Silver Spring Library.

The text of the announcement is below:

“It’s with a heavy and full heart that I announce that Bump ‘n Grind at 1200 E/W Hwy will be closing on Wednesday May 26th.

“As I look back at an amazing adventure, time and space – nothing encapsulates the experience as much as the mural (pictured up top) that rests above the record area.

“A mural of community members, friends, and staff “with music”. Created in partnership with the Neighborhood Association I helped found, the mural was inspired by the need for togetherness and community after the 2016 election by artist Daniel Katz Hernandez a graduate of DC’s treasure Gallaudet University. The mural was unveiled at our 3rd anniversary party, preceded by our annual balloon drop where kids DJ’d with their parents and ended with a champagne toast amongst friends, while playing underground records with some of my favorite trouble makers.

“While one door closes, others open. We will open new spaces in new communities again, and again, and again:

“In Silver Spring, a couple blocks from our current location, we’ll be bringing our drinks/buzz and vibe to Moorenkos – that fabulous ice cream shop next to Denizens. We aim to start slinging espresso there Memorial Day Weekend. We will also be opening soon in the downtown Silver Spring Library.

“And, we recently opened MoCo’s premier micro-roaster in Kensington. We’ve launched a music/coffee subscription platform (The Club) that spreads BnG vibes while creating a channel to help musicians establish a sustainable living that is not so reliant on touring. We are releasing another 7″ vinyl only record via Bump ‘n Grind Wax, just in time for summer.

“I realize and feel a collective sigh as I write, think about and speak about this. It hits. Has hit and will continue to hit. My boys have grown up there, we’ve had amazing regulars and staff since day one and have created so many sweet memories. As I’ve started to share the news, I’ve heard a lot of “I’m sorry’s”. I feel that sadness as I look back over seven years of establishing and building the business and growing a creative space for artists and the wider community.  BUT if this past year has taught us anything, it’s the importance of who we surround ourselves with. Who we align with, the decisions we make and the importance about how we walk through this life. The past year has been incredibly challenging, being in a state of limbo and not being able to invest and innovate at 1200 E/W. We’re excited about the next chapter, opportunities in our lives and our brand.

“We’re really proud of what we’ve accomplished over the past 7 years and we choose now to look forward, to be excited, optimistic and oh so thankful. The best way you could support us and continue to be a part of the journey is by grabbing a coffee subscription, signing up for our e-newsletter and following our various social media accounts and sharing us with your friends.

“We’re open at 1200 East-West until the last week of May. So…swing by, look around, raise your hands, breathe deep, play some records, take a twirl…I hope to see you soon!
