Silver Spring Photographer Honored as a Local Hero

Silver Spring photographer Jonna Huseman of Jonna Michelle Photography has been honored by Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-District 8) as a Local Hero of the Week for her photo essay series, Life in the Time of Coronavirus: Voices from Silver Spring.

Ms. Huseman, who writes on her blog The Sligo Creek Photographer, used her free time during the pandemic-related shutdowns to photograph area residents and business owners, as well as document their experiences, as they navigate through unprecedented times.

“I’m thrilled to feature photographer and labor activist Jonna Huseman of Jonna Michelle Photography as this week’s #MD08 Local Hero,” Rep. Raskin said in a Facebook post. “Last year, she photographed dozens of neighbors for a series documenting their COVID-19 experiences—a chronicle of the beautiful strength and diversity of Silver Spring.”

“I am beyond honored that Rep. Raskin named me a local hero of the week for the project Life in the Time of Coronavirus: Voices from Silver Spring,” Ms. Huseman said in an email to the Source. “As much as I appreciate this recognition, this project has never been about me. The goal is and always has been to shine a spotlight on our incredible and diverse community, and to tell the untold stories of residents of Silver Spring as we lived through one of the most unprecedented times in history. The real heroes are the working people — including nurses and doctors, grocery store clerks, postal workers, teachers, utility and transportation workers, and so many more — who risked their health and safety to see us through this crisis.”
