Underground Pizza Company is One of Eater’s “7 Exciting New Pizza Places to Try Around D.C.”

The quality and diversity of the restaurant scene in Silver Spring continues to earn attention and accolades from national food media.

Underground Pizza Company is included in Eater’s article titled “7 Exciting New Pizza Places to Try Around D.C.

Maryland’s secretive new pizza project specializes in hefty, Detroit-style pies cooked in a rectangular steel pan and finished with homemade tomato sauce, fresh pesto, hot honey, and imported Parmesan. Popular picks include “The Roni Boi” topped with pepperoni cups and “The Woodlands” with all types of thyme-roasted mushrooms.

Underground Pizza Company opened in February at the former home of Olazzo at 8235 Georgia Ave. in downtown Silver Spring. Olazzo closed in May of last year, ending a 15-year run in downtown Silver Spring. UPC announced last October that they were taking over the space.

UPC has been adding additional operating hours as the restaurant ramps up staffing and production capacity. “We’re just gonna do Saturday and Sunday, and then we’re gonna do some limited weekends through the month, and then open with regular hours. We’re just taking our time,” owner Evan Weinstein said of UPC’s opening in February.
