The county’s Department of Transportation has energized and activated two High-Intensity Activated Crosswalks, also known as HAWK beacons, on Fenton Street in downtown Silver Spring.
The beacons, originally installed last October, are located at the intersection of Fenton St. and Roeder Rd., and at a crosswalk between Ulta Beauty and Whole Foods on Fenton St. The crosswalks were also upgraded to high visibility (cross bar) markings, according to MCDOT.
MCDOT’s Vision Zero initiative Work Plan for the 2022-23 Fiscal Year includes the installation of HAWK beacons to “provide additional protected crossing locations by installing new traffic signals and beacons, with priority installations in high crash risk areas with infrequent crossing opportunities. Pedestrian hybrid beacons can reduce pedestrian-involved crashes by 55%.”
