Kaldi’s Social House has expanded its operating hours, according to a sign posted on the door.
The coffee shop, located at 918 Silver Spring Ave. in downtown Silver Spring, will now be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.
Kaldi’s was featured last year in Sprudge, an international publication that covers the coffee industry. The article, in which Kaldi’s owner Tsega Hailemariam is interviewed, discusses the shop’s history, as well as its strong ties to the community and its relationship with its customers. “When the customer comes in, I don’t want them to think about getting coffee, but to think they are supporting the community,” Hailemariam said. “I want to create relationships with customers.”
Meanwhile, construction has resumed at the former location of Pacci’s Neapolitan Pizzeria, adjacent to Kaldi’s at 8113 Georgia Ave., which Hailemariam took over in 2019 with plans to turn into a restaurant with an American-themed menu.
“The first thing we’re going to do is expand the size,” Hailemariam said to the Source in 2019, with plans to include enclosing the current patio space and adding an enclosed rooftop space similar to Kaldi’s.
Hailemariam will tap into the local brewing culture to supply beers for about 50-60 taps, he said, targeting a happy hour crowd as well as dinner patrons.
