Silver Spring Company Launches Climate-Focused Debit Card Giving Cash Back

A Silver Spring-based company has launched a VISA® debit card that gives cash back based on purchases that lower the user’s carbon footprint, according to the company’s website.

Futr, Inc., which does business as Future, is a finance technology company located in the Inventa Towers in downtown Silver Spring and has created the FutureCard to encourage green purchasing.

“FutureCard is the first card that gives you 6% cash back for climate smart spending and 1% for everything else every time you pay. It’s a debit card that works everywhere Visa is accepted,” according to the website.

“Climate change impacts everyone, so we designed a card for everyone, no matter your credit score or the size of your paycheck. We are on a mission to democratize climate smart living.

The company has a list it calls FutureGreen of the types of purchases that qualify for 5% cash back. They include using the card to pay for public transportation, online marketplaces for gently used clothing and thrift stores, charging electric vehicles, bike shops and more; additional categories will be added, according to the company.

In addition, shopping at certain partner companies, called FuturePartners, will earn customers 6% cash back.

“Future was founded in the fall of 2021 by Jean-Louis Warnholz and Kamal Bhattacharya and has since grown to over 20 team members across product and engineering, growth, partnerships, and operations,” according to a company release announcing a recent funding round raising $5.3 million.
