Peet’s Coffee Now Permanently Closed

Peet’s Coffee at The Blairs Shops shopping center at 1316 East-West Highway in downtown Silver Spring is now permanently closed, with Starbucks set to take over the space.

The store appears to have been emptied out, and signage has been removed.

“This location is now closed. Please visit us in either VA or DC!”, reads a sign attached to the door. “Thank you for all the support all these years. Cheers!”

“So many times I came here for the morning cheer from Mark,” reads a handwritten note attached to the sign. “Thank you all!”

Peet’s Coffee officially acknowledged the closing of the downtown Silver Spring location shortly before the October 30 closure.

“Closing one of our coffee bars is never an easy decision,” reads an email from the company to the Source. “We know the Silver Spring store was part of the daily routine of so many and we deeply regret that our lease came to an end. We have offered all our employees continued employment at one of our other 14 locations in the DMV metro area. It is our sincere hope that they will continue to work for Peet’s. For updated information on Coffeebars and hours near you, please visit the website.”

A GoFundMe fundraiser established to assist the now-unemployed staff has raised over $6,700.

Starbucks, which closed its location near the Silver Spring Metro entrance in December of 2020, has not announced an opening date.
