Red Line Trains Single-Tracking This Weekend

Metro officials announced that trains on the Red Line will be single-tracking between the Silver Spring and Forest Glen stations this weekend as a result of leak mitigation work.

Work will take place from Saturday, December 31 through Monday, January 2. Shady Grove to Silver Spring trains will run every 10 minutes, and Silver Spring to Glenmont trains will run every 20 minutes. Metro said that riders traveling north of Silver Spring should board a Glenmont-bound train, or transfer at Silver Spring. During single-tracking, trains will alternate through the work zone on a single track.

Additionally, Metro announced that rail and bus rides would be free after 8 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. Trains will operate until 2 a.m., and selected late-night bus routes will run until 3 a.m. Metro will open faregates at stations and cover fareboxes on buses; there will be no need to tap a SmarTrip card.

Riders are also encouraged to ride responsibly by remaining alert and aware of their surroundings in stations and on streets with moving trains and buses. “Any rider who is having trouble using the system safely (e.g. unable to maintain balance or feeling ill) should consider alternate means of transportation,” Metro said in a news release.
