Newell Street Community Meeting Held This Week

The county’s Department of Transportation held a community meeting this week to discuss closing Newell Street to traffic.

In 2020, Newell Street was closed to vehicle traffic between Kennett Street and East-West Highway, near Acorn Park and the planned park at the former National Tire & Battery site. The street was reopened to traffic after Labor Day in 2022.

The MCDOT has ordered a study of the street, which will be completed in early 2024, to determine if it should be closed to traffic again and how to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety. The meeting was held to collect community feedback on the project.

“Keeping the roadway open to traffic is under consideration, but the study will also look at how to improve pedestrian and bicyclist safety and expand green space in the area,” MCDOT said. “The study will examine the streetscape and opportunities to reimagine this block both with and without vehicle traffic.”
