Compass Health Center Now Open in White Oak

Compass Health Center, a behavioral health services provider based in Chicago, has opened its first location in Maryland at 11941 Bournefield Way in White Oak.

According to a press release, Compass Health Center provides expert care with issues families in Maryland are facing daily, like trauma, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), school refusal, depression, mental health, and substance use:

“Maryland has some of the longest hospital and emergency room wait times in the nation, with a 2023 study reporting “Maryland patients have to wait an average of four hours before being called to get treated.” This leads to delayed care for many who are facing a mental health crisis – a situation where a quick response is vital. In February 2021, 39.1% of adults in Maryland reported symptoms of anxiety or depression, but 31.3% of those were unable to get needed counseling or therapy. The state has also been investing in youth mental health, recently announcing a grant fund to support mental health services in schools. Over 57,000 Marylanders aged 12–17 have depression and nearly half of Marylanders aged 12–17 who have depression did not receive any care in the last year. This center highlights and addresses the needs for important mental health services.”

In Maryland, there has been a tenfold increase in text conversations from young people to the 988 suicide prevention and mental health hotline, as reported by MoCo360.

“Our youth and adults need increased mental health support, which will help to address some of the issues plaguing our communities,” Maryland Senator Will Smith (D-20) said about the opening. “Nearly 838,000 Marylanders suffering from mental health issues did not receive the care they needed last year. I’m grateful this center will help to increase the ability for Maryland students that receive help when they’re struggling.”

“Nothing positive happens to families that are left sitting for hours or days for mental health needs in an emergency room or sent home to be left on a wait list for weeks to months to obtain care,” Compass Health Center founder and psychiatrist Dr. David Schreiber said. “Those in need of our help will talk live to someone on our team within 24 hours and be scheduled for an intake [the] same day or next day.”

Compass Health Center said that the opening of the new White Oak location also brings 100 new jobs to Maryland with its physical location in White Oak, and its virtual program will help support the mental health of residents across Maryland. Additionally, the center is introducing an internship program for young people to work with Compass Health Center and get hands-on experience working in the healthcare industry.

According to the company, Compass Health Center aims to offer mental health services for adolescents, young adults, and adults within 24-48 hours of the first phone call. Their approach is tailored for these age groups and is based on three key principles: immediate care, comprehensive care, and specialization. Compass Health Center ensures quick access with assessments available the same or the next day, and psychiatric evaluations within 48 hours of program initiation. They provide treatment for a broad range of ages, starting with children through adulthood, and offer expert care in areas like Trauma, OCD, School Refusal, Depression, Mental Health, and Substance Use.

Compass Health Center operates from 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. Intake specialists are reachable by phone from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
