Overnight Earthquake Felt in Silver Spring, Takoma Park

A minor earthquake rattled Rockville and was felt in communities as far as West Virginia overnight on Tuesday.

NBC Washington reported that an earthquake occurred around 12:50 a.m. with a magnitude of 2.3, equivalent to the energy release of a bolt of lightning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake’s epicenter was near Lakewood Country Club in Rockville.

Many reports have been received regarding a loud rumble or shaking in Montgomery County, reaching as far as Frederick, D.C., Silver Spring, and Takoma Park. The event lasted approximately 10 seconds, as reported by The MoCo Show.

Authorities have not reported any damage or injuries.
