Area restaurants continue to attract local and national attention and accolades for their quality and diversity.
The Zinnia Breakfast Sandwich ($12) has received a top editor’s pick in this year’s Best of Bethesda issue:
The two-hand, two-napkin Zinnia Breakfast Sandwich is a beast. Built on a toasted English muffin from Hyattsville’s Lyon Bakery, it’s filled out with scrambled organic eggs, cheddar cheese and your choice of applewood smoked bacon, maple-sage breakfast sausage, vegan bacon or smooth slices of avocado. For a touch of acid, a few filaments of pickled shallot are slipped in at the end.
Zinnia opened its doors in October 2021 at the former location of Mrs. K’s Toll House, situated at the intersection of Colesville Rd. and Dale Drive in Silver Spring. Mrs. K’s ceased operations and was made available for lease in 2020, having been in business for 90 years.
The Restaurant at Zinnia was launched in 2022 under the leadership of former Republic chef Danny Wells, combining the gardens, the tavern, and the café to provide diners with a range of dining choices. Republic, which Wells established in Takoma Park in 2013, closed after operating for nearly ten years and was replaced by Motorkat last May.
