Cooking Up Change: Shepherd’s Table Launching New Culinary Skills Program

Shepherd’s Table is introducing a new Culinary Skills Training pilot program, in response to feedback from many clients seeking job training opportunities.

The pilot program, outlined in the nonprofit’s winter newsletter, aims to equip its students with the essential skills and confidence needed to succeed in the food service industry and advance toward self-sufficiency.

Under the leadership of the Director of Meal Services, Christina Moore, Shepherd’s Table will kick off its inaugural class in mid-March. The 12-week program features immersive, hands-on training in a professional kitchen, followed by a 4-week internship in a restaurant culinary setting. Beyond culinary skills, students will receive instruction in life skills and job readiness. Participants will delve into various topics including kitchen safety, food preparation, budgeting, healthy habits, goal setting, and more.

To accommodate the growing demand for meals and the new training program, Shepherd’s Table has joined forces with a local church to expand its kitchen capacity. The program is receiving financial backing from Gaithersburg-based Adventist Healthcare.

Additionally, Shepherd’s Table is seeking donations to assist their clients in preparing for the seasonal closure of their overflow shelter. Donations can be dropped off at Shepherd’s Table, located at 8106 Georgia Ave. in downtown Silver Spring. Donation hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and on weekends from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
