End of an Era: MOD Pizza at Ellsworth Place Shuts Down Permanently

MOD Pizza at Ellsworth Place has permanently closed, according to mall officials.

The quick-service pizza spot at 909 Ellsworth Dr. in downtown Silver Spring was closed for several weeks in 2022 for “maintenance issues,” which included flooring that needed to be replaced, according to store employees. MOD Pizza closed again last year due to “plumming issues [sic],” however the restaurant never reopened.

The restaurant’s Google listing shows the location as permanently closed and has been removed from the chain’s website.

“MOD Pizza has vacated its space at Ellsworth Place,” mall owners GBT Realty said in a statement confirming the restaurant’s closure. “We are actively marketing this to prospective tenants and hope to have a new amenity to announce to Silver Spring soon.”

MOD Pizza opened its Ellsworth Place location in 2015, the chain’s first in Maryland. Known for their individual artisan-style pizzas made on demand, MOD uses fresh-pressed dough and signature sauces to craft a customizable experience for customers. With over 30 featured toppings to choose from, patrons can create their own pizzas and salads or opt for MOD classics from the menu. Regardless of the number of toppings selected, pizzas and salads are priced the same. Pizzas are cooked by hand in an 800-degree oven in under 3 minutes, while salads are hand-tossed in full view of the customer. In addition to their food offerings, MOD also provides a selection of local craft beers, wine, handspun milkshakes, house-made lemonades, and iced teas.

A new tenant has not yet been announced by Ellsworth Place management. The Source will update as more information becomes available.
