MHP Celebrates Milestone: Named Washington Business Journal’s Nonprofit Developer of the Year

Silver Spring-based Montgomery Housing Partnership (MHP) has been named Nonprofit Developer of The Year in the Washington Business Journal’s Best Real Estate Deal Awards of 2023.

This is the second time that MHP has been recognized by WBJ for its impactful work in the Greater Washington region. In 2020, the nonprofit received the Best Real Estate Deal of the Year award for its Worthington Woods Apartments project.

MHP, along with other honorees, will be celebrated at an awards ceremony on April 25.

President Robert A. Goldman expressed his organization’s enthusiasm for the recognition, emphasizing MHP’s commitment to shaping communities and addressing housing concerns to promote social, economic, and environmental well-being. “MHP’s impacts in 2023 extended beyond addressing housing concerns to actively shaping communities, helping them thrive socially, economically, and environmentally,” Goldman said in a press release.

As MHP commemorates its 35th anniversary this year, it continues to solidify its reputation for effectively managing the acquisition and rehabilitation of multi-family affordable housing properties in Montgomery County and beyond. In 2023, MHP achieved significant milestones, including expanding the number of preserved or renovated units along the Purple Line corridor to 1,100. This progress plays a crucial role in safeguarding moderate- and low-income residents from displacement.

Furthermore, MHP undertook various projects in 2023, such as completing the construction of Colonnade at the Creek in Takoma Park, initiating the redevelopment of The Residences at Forest Glen in Silver Spring, commencing renovations at Worthington Woods in D.C., finalizing the North Frederick Apartments financial close, restoration of the Flower Theatre façade, and approving the sketch plan for the Amherst Square / Wheaton Arts deal.

Additionally, MHP launched a fund for residents displaced by the fire at the Arrive Silver Spring apartment complex.

Beyond its focus on affordable housing, MHP remains dedicated to enhancing resident opportunities through Community Life enrichment programs for children and families, as well as outreach initiatives supporting residents facing challenges. The organization received three additional excellence awards in 2023, including the Wheaton & Kensington Chamber of Commerce Tribute Award, the Community Development Network of Maryland Impact Award, and the NeighborWorks America Impact Award.
