Silver Spring Man Faces Charges in Fatal Street Racing Incident

33-year-old Aaron Givens of Silver Spring has been indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on charges stemming from a fatal street racing collision in 2023.

A Montgomery County Police press release issued Tuesday stated that Givens surrendered himself on March 4 in response to an arrest warrant. The charges against him include negligent homicide by vehicle, criminally negligent manslaughter by vehicle, and participating in a race or speed contest while driving.

The incident occurred on January 17, 2023, around 2:23 p.m., when officers from the 1st District and Montgomery County Fire Rescue responded to a collision involving a 2018 Infiniti Q50 driven by 28-year-old Romario Coke, also from Silver Spring. The initial investigation revealed that Coke was traveling eastbound on West Gude Dr. at an excessive speed when he lost control and crashed into a tree in the center median. Coke was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Following an investigation by the Collision Reconstruction Unit, detectives uncovered evidence suggesting that Coke was engaged in a race with Givens, who was driving a blue Ram 1500 TRX pickup truck.

Givens was released on an unsecured personal bond, MCPD said.
