Rent Dispute Turns Violent: Silver Spring Man Convicted of Attempted Murder

A Silver Spring man was found guilty this week of attempting to murder his landlord in 2020, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s office.

According to a press release, 31-year-old Geofrey Gaitan was found guilty by a Montgomery County Circuit Court jury after three trials, with the previous two resulting in hung juries.

On April 19, 2020, Gaitan severely assaulted his 63-year-old landlord during a dispute over rent at a home on the 9700 block of Hastings Drive in Silver Spring. The victim sustained multiple skull fractures and a permanent, traumatic brain injury, according to charging documents.

The landlord, who police officers found lying unconscious in a pool of blood, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

“Our dedicated attorneys remained committed to seeking justice for this victim and his family. This was an unprovoked attack on an innocent man and the defendant will now be held accountable,” Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said Thursday.

Gaitan faces up to 30 years in prison at his sentencing, which is scheduled for July 25.
