The former Starbucks location in Downtown Silver Spring is currently available for lease, according to signage posted at the now-vacant premises.
The 1,706-square-foot space, situated next to Potbelly Sandwich Works at 915 Ellsworth Drive, became vacant after Starbucks closed its doors at the end of March.
Store employees attributed the closure of the Starbucks location to “safety concerns.” However, Fairfax, Va.-based Peterson Companies, which manages and leases the Downtown Silver Spring development, clarified that the store’s lease had expired and was not renewed, resulting in the closure.
Additionally, Starbucks opened a new location at The Blairs Shops last summer, replacing Peet’s Coffee and a Starbucks location next to the Silver Spring Metro station that closed in 2020.
Peterson Companies issued the following statement in March:
The safety and security of our customers, merchants and their employees is our top priority. Downtown Silver Spring has 24/7 private security patrolling and monitoring our development, with cameras located throughout the property and several businesses utilizing their own private security detail within their establishments.
We work closely with local officials and the Montgomery County Police Department and the 3rd District to enhance public safety measures and support their initiatives to increase the police presence in the area, like their new ‘Drone as First Responder’ program.
We’re sorry to see Starbucks close, we have several prospects in the works for the space. Customers will still be able to get their caffeine fix at Whole Foods Market, Panera and Chick-fil-A, to name a few.
We’re pleased to welcome several new tenants in the upcoming months including locally owned Chido’s Tex-Mex Grill and Roaming Rooster as well as Gold’s Gym.
The Source will provide updates on a new tenant as more information becomes available.
