Silver Spring Man Sentenced to 27 Years for Attempted Murder in Rent Dispute

31-year-old Geofrey Gaitan of Silver Spring was sentenced to 27 years in prison this week for a near-fatal attack on his landlord in 2020, according to the Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office.

In April, a Montgomery County Circuit Court jury found Gaitan guilty after three trials. The previous two trials resulted in hung juries.

On April 19, 2020, Gaitan attacked his 63-year-old landlord during a rent dispute at a home on the 9700 block of Hastings Drive in Silver Spring. The landlord was found unconscious in a pool of blood and taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The landlord suffered multiple skull fractures and a permanent traumatic brain injury, according to charging documents.

“Our dedicated attorneys remained committed to seeking justice for this victim and his family. This was an unprovoked attack on an innocent man and the defendant will now be held accountable,” Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy said at Gaitan’s conviction in April.

Gaitan will also serve five years of supervised probation upon release.
