Police: Flower Vendor Dragged by SUV in Attempted Robbery on Beltway Exit Ramp

Maryland State Police are investigating an attempted robbery and assault of a flower vendor on a Beltway exit ramp in Silver Spring on Sunday afternoon.

Police responded to an attempted robbery on Sunday at around 3 p.m. on the exit ramp from Interstate 495 East to Route 650 South. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 64-year-old woman was selling flowers along the road when a driver in an SUV allegedly called her over while stopped in traffic on the ramp, feigning interest in buying flowers, but instead snatched the woman’s purse.

The victim was briefly dragged and then fell while still attached to her purse as the SUV sped away. She was taken to Holy Cross Hospital for treatment of her injuries and later released, according to a press release.

Police said the dark-colored SUV with D.C. license plates was occupied by at least two Black males, one wearing a ski mask, and was last seen heading southbound on Route 650 after the attempted robbery.

Montgomery County Police are assisting in the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Maryland State Police at (301) 424-2101.
