Crisfield Seafood, a longtime institution in downtown Silver Spring, will close this month after nearly 80 years of operation.
According to a Fox 5 report, the restaurant located at 8012 Georgia Ave. will close at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 22, because one of the Landis family members could not reach an agreement on the lease renewal.
The MoCo Show first reported the closure on Wednesday.
The Landis family opened Crisfield Seafood in downtown Silver Spring in 1945. The restaurant gained local and national popularity, attracting celebrities such as Jimmy Buffett, who dined there whenever he performed in the area.
Last August, it was highlighted in a New York Times article, “The 25 Best Restaurants in Washington, D.C. Right Now,” where writer Korsha Wilson praised the restaurant as “a master class in no-frills Mid-Atlantic dishes,” mentioning its seafood bisque, broiled fish platters, and filler-free crab cakes:
Open since 1945 on Georgia Avenue, Crisfield is a master class in no-frills Mid Atlantic dishes like seafood bisque, broiled fish platters and crab cakes with no filler. The interior of the restaurant hasn’t changed much over the years, but the neighborhood around it has, making a visit feel like stepping back in time, where this style of dining was the norm for the area. It’s a perfect destination for a platter of fried seafood with juicy, lightly battered shrimp, scallops and perch.
In 2021, Washingtonian Magazine recognized the restaurant as one of the “61 Neighborhood Restaurants That Make the DC Area a Better Place to Eat—and Live.”
“The Landis Family would like to express our thanks and gratitude to all of our customers, fellow teammates, and friends,” the restaurant said on Facebook. “A special thanks to the myriad of sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and cousins, of our extended family who helped us build a DMV legacy.
“We have always felt that the restaurant was just another room in our house. We have been proud to welcome you [into] our home for nearly 80 years.”
