Wiseguy Pizza Closes Only Maryland Location at Westfield Wheaton Mall

Wiseguy Pizza has permanently closed its location at the Westfield Wheaton Mall.

The restaurant opened in the mall’s food court in September 2023, succeeding Angel’s Pizza & Pasta, and was the only Wiseguy Pizza location in Maryland, according to The MoCo Show.

Wiseguy Pizza founder Nuri Erol opened Wiseguy Pizza at 300 Massachusetts Ave. in D.C. in 2012, quickly amassing rave reviews in the Washington Post, Washingtonian, and Yelp.

Reston, Va.-based Thompson Hospitality Group acquired Wiseguy Pizza in 2022, its second pizza-related acquisition. The company had previously acquired Matchbox Restaurants in late 2020, following its emergence from Chapter 11 bankruptcy, after managing nine Matchbox locations for two years before the acquisition.

CEO Warren Thompson said at the time that Erol would maintain a significant equity stake in the company and that the menu would remain unchanged.

“Nuri is very much involved in protecting the integrity of the brand. Going forward, we won’t open a new unit unless he’s in agreement,” Thompson said to Eater in 2022, noting that Erol would have the final say on any menu additions or tweaks.

A replacement tenant for the Westfield Wheaton Mall location has yet to be announced.
