Walgreens to Close Downtown Silver Spring Pharmacy on March 20, 2025

Walgreens will shut down its downtown Silver Spring pharmacy on March 20 as part of a plan to close 1,200 stores by 2027.

The store originally opened as a Rite Aid on the ground floor of the Zalco building at 8701 Georgia Ave. in 2016 but was rebranded after selling 1,932 of its locations to Walgreens for $4.38 billion in 2018.

The company’s White Oak location closed last year.

The Walgreens website states, “This location will permanently close on March 20, 2025. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have prescriptions at this location, learn about filling your Rx at another Walgreens.”

The 1,200 store closures were announced last year as the drugstore chain struggles to compete with online rivals and declining prescription drug reimbursements.
