Westfield Wheaton Mall will host a Black History Month celebration on Saturday to honor the history and global impact of the Buffalo Soldiers.
The free celebration will feature displays, personal stories, a Q&A session honoring the Buffalo Soldiers and their contributions, and highlights and support for Black-owned businesses in the area.
The Buffalo Soldiers were a segregated unit of African American soldiers in the U.S. Army established by Congress after the Civil War. Native Americans nicknamed them “Buffalo Soldiers” during the Indian Wars of the 19th century.
After serving in World Wars I and II and the Korean War, the last Buffalo Soldiers units were disbanded in 1951 following the Army’s integration.
