Georgia Avenue Lane Closures Begin This Week for Metropolitan Branch Trail Project

The Montgomery County Department of Transportation will shift and close lanes on Georgia Avenue between Burlington and Sligo Avenues this week as part of the Metropolitan Branch Trail Phase 2A project.

The project involves constructing an asphalt shared-use path, new concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, ramps, and a stairwell, completing roadway construction and resurfacing the existing pavement, grading, drainage improvements, and installing storm drainage structures.

Additionally, a new two-span through-girder bridge, approximately 200 feet long with a micropile pier, will be constructed over Georgia Avenue and will receive extensive, multi-stage traffic maintenance, along with necessary signage, lighting, landscaping, and fencing.

According to MCDOT, starting March 6, lane markings will be shifted two feet and restriped along southbound Georgia Avenue while maintaining two 11-foot lanes. A barrier wall will remain in place, closing the left travel lane.

Starting March 7, the left travel lane on northbound Georgia Avenue will be closed for approximately 3 to 4 months, marked by a barrier wall and signage. The roadway will be restriped to provide two 11-foot travel lanes, allowing two lanes to remain open in each direction throughout this period.

Overnight work will be conducted from March 10 to 13. During this time, Gaithersburg-based Concrete General, Inc. (CGI) will install steel girders and diaphragms for the new pedestrian bridge over Georgia Avenue. Montgomery County Police officers will be present on-site to assist with traffic control.
