The Walgreens pharmacy at 8701 Georgia Ave. in downtown Silver Spring has permanently closed.
The downtown Silver Spring store first opened as a Rite Aid on the ground floor of the Zalco building in 2016 and was rebranded in 2018 after Walgreens acquired 1,932 Rite Aid stores for $4.38 billion.
We reported last month that the location would shut its doors on March 20 as part of the company’s plan to close 1,200 stores by 2027, which comes as the drugstore chain faces challenges competing with online rivals and declining reimbursements for prescription drugs.
The company closed its White Oak pharmacy last year.
Walgreens in Takoma Park has obtained prescription files from the downtown Silver Spring pharmacy, and the Community, A Walgreens Pharmacy location at 1015 Ripley Street is available to assist with prescriptions.
The company’s website states, “This location will permanently close on March 20, 2025. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have prescriptions at this location, learn about filling your Rx at another Walgreens.”
