Auto-Related Thefts Surge Amid Crime Decline in Downtown Silver Spring

Montgomery County Police reported last month that crime in downtown Silver Spring has decreased by 7.6 percent over the past year, highlighting significant reductions in carjackings and robberies.

3rd District Commander Jason Cokinos noted in a post on X (formerly Twitter) last week that downtown Silver Spring has continued its downward trend in most crime areas into the first quarter of 2025.

Key statistics comparing the first quarter of 2025 to the first quarter of 2024 in the downtown area show substantial decreases in violent crimes. Robberies have declined by 30.8 percent, and carjacking incidents have fallen by 50 percent.

There have been no reported contact shootings or homicides, and felony assaults involving guns have decreased by 90 percent.

However, according to The MoCo Show, there has been an increase in both auto theft and theft from vehicles, raising concerns that require ongoing attention and targeted enforcement.

WTOP reported on Monday that Cokinos has cited several factors for the drop in crime, including increased security in and around downtown parking garages, the “Drone as First Responder” program that was recently expanded to Bethesda, and changes to laws regarding late-night businesses and their closing times.

Additionally, early indicators suggest positive progress in combating retail theft.

“We are beginning to see positive returns on our retail theft efforts,” Cokinos said on X.
