Montgomery Parks officials have announced that the permanent installation of the “Synesthesia” sculpture at Gene Lynch Urban Park in downtown Silver Spring is complete.
“Synesthesia” is designed to project vibrant colors from the park’s central pergola structure, enhanced by LED lighting that creates a captivating display at night. Baltimore artist Becky Borlan created the sculpture, which features a stainless-steel frame and glass panels that utilize a graphic film to produce a kaleidoscopic effect.
Gene Lynch Urban Park is a 0.25-acre triangular park that opened in June 2023 and honors former Planning Board Commissioner and civic leader Gene Lynch. The park is across from the Paul S. Sarbanes Transit Center and the Silver Spring Metro Station in downtown Silver Spring.
“Synesthesia” won the park’s art installation competition. An artist selection panel narrowed the competition’s over one hundred entries to four finalists, and the public voted to determine the winner.
The sculpture’s installation was initially slated for completion last summer.
“Public art is important for so many reasons – it engages and inspires, creates a sense of place and identity, and supports local artists,” said Montgomery Parks director Miti Figueredo. “We are thrilled with the new installation and hope it will catch the attention of passers-by to stop and enjoy the park.”
