Starting Monday, a water main replacement project will clog traffic on Colesville Road between Downtown Silver Spring and the Beltway.
According to WSSC’s Frequently Asked Questions document regarding the project, they “will be replacing and relocating approximately 1.88 miles of water mains along US 29/Colesville Road and water connections to intersecting streets. The new water mains will be zinc-coated, ductile iron pipe wrapped in a protective coating. These new pipes have a life expectancy of approximately 100 years.”
The water mains being replaced are exceeding their life expectancy, having been originally installed in the 1920s. Nearly 40 percent of WSSC’s existing water and sewer mains are more than 50 years old.
The $3 Million Colesville Road Transmission Water Main Replacement Project will be completed in three different phases, with anticipated completion in Spring 2019:
- Phase I: Georgia Avenue to Sligo Creek Parkway. (Anticipated start August 21, 2017)
- Phase II: Sligo Creek Parkway to the Beltway (Anticipated start July 2018)
- Phase III: Sligo Creek Parkway Pipelining (Anticipated start January 2019)
The work is slated to be performed 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, outside of rush hours. There will be some overnight and weekend work, and WSSC has stated that affected residents and business owners will receive advance notice.
