The Highwood Theatre has issued an invitation for students to audition for a new, year-long program in theater production.

The course is described as a “conservatory-style program designed to offer an intensive training experience for performers in grades 7-12,” according to a press release.

The program starts in September and will run through the performances scheduled for June 2018. It will include master classes and other course work taught by professionals, allowing for a deeper exploration of the material.

“The program stays true to Highwood’s established atmosphere of inclusion and building community through theatre, while at the same time challenging students and providing them with an unparalleled artistic experience,” said Matthew Nicola, Highwood artistic director and one of this program’s directors.

Students will learn, rehearse and perform a full-length production that will be based on Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim’s musical inspired by Romeo and Juliet. A team of Highwood staff members will choreograph it.

During the program, students will take multi-week master classes taught by New York-based Nick Blaemire, a Broadway performer and writer, and Cate Caplin, a producer, director and choreographer from Los Angeles, supplemented by classes with local artists.

Auditions will be held at the studios at 914 Silver Spring Ave. on Wednesday, Aug. 30 and Tuesday, Sept. 5 from 6-8:30 p.m. Students must stay for the entire audition, though they only need to attend one day. They should not attend if they don’t intend to commit to the program if accepted. These auditions are for the program, not any individual roles.

Students may reserve an audition spot online. For more information, email or call 301.587.0697.
