The U.S. Postal Service has confirmed that the post office located in the Spring Center on 16th St. will move its operations to the Silver Spring Library at 900 Wayne Ave.

The post office is the only business left in the center, which is shut down for construction of the Purple Line light rail.

“The Postal Service is finalizing plans to move to a temporary location due to the Metropolitan Transit Authorities’ request to vacate our existing facility,” said a USPS spokesperson in an email to the Source.

“We will temporary relocate at the library at 900 Wayne Ave, Silver Spring, which is scheduled for late summer 2018,” the email continued. “The library allows uninterrupted local postal operations while we find a longer-term solution.

“There is no timetable for that action at this time,” the representative wrote.

That “longer-term solution” has been said to be a location in the Thayer and Spring Apartments being constructed by Fairfield Residential, expected to open late this year.

However, Lee Engle, the retail leasing agent for the property, told the Source that he knows nothing about the post office coming in to that property.

Postal customers will be able to park in the Wayne Avenue garage and cross over to the office. The first 30 minutes of parking is free at that garage.
