Several county departments and other organizations created pop-up spaces along Fenton Street and Ellsworth Drive in Silver Spring Friday to mark International PARK(ing) Day.

“PARK(ing) Day is a annual, open-source, global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places,” according to the IPD website.

The intent is to point out that cities need more urban open space, to talk about how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban living.

Below are photos of some of the pop-ups. Click on the thumbnail images to enlarge. All photos by Mike Diegel.
