Specialty Cake Store Coming to Seminary Place

A Texas transplant soon will open a specialty cake store at 9462 Georgia Ave. in the Seminary Place Shopping Center.

Katheryn Hoerster is the owner/operator of Nothing Bundt Cakes, a national chain founded about 20 years ago in Las Vegas that has grown to about 300 franchises across the country, including locations in Gaithersburg and Vienna, Va.

“There are Nothing Bundt Cakes all over in Texas,” Hoerster said. “My parents actually knew the brand. I had been living here in the D.C. area for about three years and kind of was looking for an opportunity like this. [I’ve] always been looking for some type of entrepreneurial opportunity and my parents thought ‘You should look into this,’ so I did.”

Hoerster’s background is in the travel industry, where she was working with a small company that allowed her to work remotely while gaining business experience. She chose to come to this area, where she had friends, and now is starting her own business.

Nothing Bundt Cakes stores offer nine standard flavors, including chocolate chocolate chip, vanilla, red velvet, white chocolate raspberry, carrot, lemon and others.

“We [also] do a rotating seasonal flavor. When I open, it will be snicker doodle,” Hoerster said. “[And] we do our signature buttercream frosting on all of our cakes.”

The standard cakes come in two sizes, 8” and 10”, which can be tiered, bundtlets (think cupcakes) and ‘bundtinis’ (bite-sized cakes sold by the dozen). Customized decorations for birthdays, holidays and other occasions are available as well.

“We’re also going to a have a retail storefront, what we call a ‘bundtique,’” she said. “Lots of cute gifts and cards and balloons—kind of celebration solutions.”

She’s hoping to open around the first of the year, or shortly after.

“I’ve felt super-welcomed by the whole community so far,” Hoerster said. “The whole Forest Glen/Montgomery Hills neighborhood is just lovely, and I’m really looking forward to being here and opening our doors and spreading joy through cake.”
