Gandhi Brigade Youth Media will premiere its new documentary “To Serve and Protect?” at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27 in the Silver Spring Civic Center.
The film is an examination of the use of force and police accountability; a panel discussion with Q&A will follow.
Participants in the Gandhi Brigade’s summer program considered a number of different topics to focus on before deciding to pursue this project.
“We voted on this one because it was the most relevant to the times and there was a lot of discussion going on about police accountability,” said Alix Swann, acting as spokesperson for the group.
“We hope to educate more people so that they know the facts and statistics behind the issue of police accountability,” she continued.
Nine people in the summer program worked for five weeks to produce the film, which is about eight minutes long.
The panel discussion will present three points of view from Montgomery County Police Commander Marcus Jones, Montgomery County NAACP Chapter President Linda Plummer and Howard University Professor Jennifer Thomas. Questions from the audience will be encouraged.
As of Tuesday, the group was expecting about 60 people to attend. Tickets are $10, the cost is 100 percent tax deductible, and they can be purchased here.
