Red Line trains will not operate between Silver Spring and Fort Totten for 16 days beginning Saturday, Nov. 25.
During that time, the Takoma station, all of its parking lots and metered spaces will be closed. Limited free shuttle service will run between the three stations.
The closure is for a capital improvement project to replace rail ties, eliminate joints, and install 800 feet of new rail along a four-mile section of track, as well as upgrading signals, replacing grout pad and installing new power cables.
In addition, installation of radio communications cables and preventive maintenance work on the weekend of Dec. 2-3 will close stations at Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton and Glenmont. Again, limited free shuttles will operate between stations.
Trains will run every 12 minutes between Glenmont and Silver Spring, and every 10 minutes between Shady Grove and Fort Totten (every 5 minutes between Grosvenor and NoMa-Gallaudet U during weekday peak periods).
After 9:30 p.m., trains will operate every 15 minutes.
On weekends, train frequencies may change to coordinate with other planned track work on the system, according to WMATA.
WMATA suggest travelers consider using the bus services from Silver Spring and Takoma to get back and forth from downtown.
The MARC train from Silver Spring to Union Station is another option for commuters. The TRiPS Commuter Store at the Silver Spring Transit Center will open a 5 a.m., an hour earlier than usual, during the closure so travelers can buy tickets for the first train.
