Registration is now open for the 4th Annual Leo’s Run, which will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018.

Registration deadlines are:

  • Early Registration, $20, Nov. 28-Dec. 19
  • Open Registration, $25, Dec. 20-Jan. 30
  • Late Registration, $30, Jan. 31-Feb. 3

Leo’s Run is a 5K run/walk in memory of Leo Michael Mowery, son of Source of the Spring co-founder Mike Mowery and Carolyn Joyce (CJ), who was stillborn on Feb. 2, 2014, which was a Super Bowl Sunday. For that reason, the run in his honor is held each year on Super Bowl Sunday.

Participants will start at East Silver Spring Elementary School at 613 Silver Spring Ave., head to Sligo Creek Park, where Leo’s memorial was held, and returns to the school through the neighborhood and along the street where Leo would have been raised.

As his parents have written, the run/walk “aids in the healing process and serves as a way to honor our son.”

In the spring of 2014, neighbors assisted with the creation of a memorial garden at his parents’ home. Leo’s Garden is also a 501(c)3 nonprofit “which not only includes the run, but also aspires to start a scholarship for children whose parents have experienced a pre-natal loss (i.e., the recipient will have lost a sibling), and supporting and sponsoring creative and artistic activities or therapies such as yoga, art, and outdoor education as a means of promoting the well-being of families of families who have suffered a still birth or other tragic loss.”

Following the run, participants can enjoy entertainment and a raffle at the school. Last year’s run attracted more than 400 participants; hot chocolate, coffee and tea will be available again this year.

Leo’s brother, Lyle, will celebrate his first birthday in December.

See the Leo’s Run FAQ for more information about the event.
