Famous Pawn Brokers will open a shop at 9443 Georgia Ave. in the space formerly occupied by New Yorker Bakery.
The pawnshop is part of First Cash Financial Services, which operated more than 1,250 locations in 14 states, Mexico, El Salvador and Guatemala.
The company was founded in 1988 and is based in Arlington, Texas. It operates stores under 14 different brands, including First Cast Pawn, King Pawn, and Valu+Pawn, among others.
In 2016, First Cash Financial Services merged with Cash America International, forming FirstCash Inc., which then began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. The combined companies have more than 2,000 locations.
Famous Pawn Brokers was located in the Spring Center on 16th Street prior to the shopping center closing to prepare for Purple Line construction.
The company currently operates 25 locations in the metropolitan area, offering pawn loans, payday loans, title loans, check cashing and retail sales.
