Downtown Silver Spring to Get $10 Million Renovation, New Tenants

The owners of the Downtown Silver Spring development are planning a $10 million renovation of the area that will include public art and a new outdoor plaza featuring green space.

The news came in a joint announcement from Peterson Companies and Foulger-Pratt, which 20 years ago built the 440,000-square-foot shopping, dining, and entertainment destination located on Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street.

The companies also announced new tenants for the area, including The Eleanor, a combination bar, restaurant and entertainment venue that will occupy 7,700 square feet near the development’s fountain (the same space as Lincoln’s Bar-B-Que).

The eatery, which also operates an outlet across from the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro station, will serve brunch, lunch, dinner and feature two happy hours a day every weekday. The space will include six bowling lanes, more than a dozen arcade games, outdoor patios and 20 beer taps.

In addition, a Roll By Goodyear tire store will open at 815 Ellsworth Dr. in the space formerly occupied by zpizza.

Customers can buy tires, including brands other than Goodyear, online or in the store and have them installed while they shop or visit other parts of the downtown. The company also will send a van with installers to the customer, or pick up the car via its valet service.

The Silver Spring store is part of a pilot program begun in Maryland last year; other stores are in Bethesda, Potomac, Gaithersburg and Rockville.

In addition, the companies announced that Copper Canyon Grill will be renovated, The Loft will be “refreshed” now that the company has renewed its lease. Ulta will relocate in the spring of 2020 to Fenton Street with a new design in the former City Sports space.

“When we developed Downtown Silver Spring 20 years ago, we ushered in a new era for Silver Spring and served as a catalyst for the growth and development that has completely transformed the area into a vibrant, energetic downtown,” said Paul Weinschenk, president of retail for Peterson Companies, in the press release. “We’re excited to, once again, lead the charge with a reinvigorated core featuring new shops, restaurants and gathering places for the community that reflect the lifestyles of those who live, work and visit Downtown Silver Spring.”

Other changes may be coming as well, as the Peterson Companies map of the complex shows the spaces currently occupied by Eggspectations, Color Me Mine and Cold Stone Creamery marked as “available.” However, this is standard procedure for outlets that have leases with upcoming expiration dates.
