A building permit has been issued to Mattress Firm to remodel the space on the corner of Colesville Road and Fenton Street formerly occupied by American Apparel.
Construction began last week on the store, which will offer a variety of mattresses, adjustable beds, massage chairs, bedroom furniture and accessories such as pillows and bedding.
The company was founded in Houston, Texas in 1986 and now has more than 3,500 stores and franchises around the country. It reported more than $3.5 billion in sales in 2015 and is the country’s largest mattress specialty retailer.
In November 2015, the company agreed to acquire all outstanding equity interest in the holding company of Sleepy’s for about $780 million, according to company documents. It has since rebranded those locations, including the Sleepy’s location in Burnt Mills Shopping Center.
Steinhoff International, an integrated retailer that manufactures, sources and retails furniture, household goods and general merchandise worldwide, acquired Mattress Firm for $3.8 billion in September 2016.
