With news of Discovery’s departure from Silver Spring, there has been much speculation about what will happen to the Discovery building and site. And with past issues surrounding the construction of the Silver Spring Transit Center across the street, there had been much attention paid to that project. And now with the start of Purple Line construction in the same vicinity, there has been steady news coverage about that project.
Construction appears to be finishing up at the original location of Quarry House Tavern.
“I think that it is important for kids to volunteer because it is good to show them it’s simple to help someone less fortunate than you, but to them it means the world. Not only do they get joy from your kind act, but you do too! The joy of giving is wonderful, and it leaves you with a sense that you’ve made a difference in someone’s life. If you learn this at a young age it becomes something that sticks with you for life.”
Two local restaurants are participating in Metropolitan Washington Restaurant Week, which will run from Jan. 22-28.
“Little Drops is an online fundraising group whose members donate $5 twice a month to a charity selected by vote through Facebook. After the election, I felt compelled to take action and create the positive change I wanted to see in the world. I was part of a number of progressive Facebook groups and kept thinking about how impactful it would be if every group member contributed even just a dollar to nonprofits that are already doing great work. After suggesting this a few times, and no one taking the bait, I decided to try it myself.”
Paisano’s Pizza, a northern Virginia-based chain, plans to open a location at 8213 Georgia Ave., formerly occupied by Radio Shack.
Discovery Communications, a cornerstone of Silver Spring’s revitalization, will move its headquarters to New York City and sell its downtown building.
