COVID–19 Closures Extended for Schools, Public Facilities

Gov. Larry Hogan extended the closure of public schools due to the COVID-19 emergency, and Montgomery County Public Schools began distributing laptops to students needing them for distance learning. The closures are in effect until at least April 24 and all extracurricular programs, athletic programs are cancelled.

Nonprofit Teams with Restaurants to Feed Needy, Support Workers

Local nonprofit Silver Spring Cares has teamed up with a group of Silver Spring/Takoma Park restaurants to provide meals to needy area residents. To fund the effort and help to support the restaurants’ employees, SSC last week launched a Community Connection Go Fund Me page, according to Heather Foley, SSC’s executive director.

Salon Moves from Georgia Avenue to Bonifant Location

Salon Zoma has moved from its Georgia Avenue location to 919 Bonifant St. on the ground floor of The Bonifant apartments. Owner Fasika Kebede opened her first location as an Aveda “concept salon” in 2010, she said, offering Aveda’s environmentally friendly products exclusively. The new shop continues that concept.

Proposed Montgomery County Metrobus Cuts Draw Major Pushback

A crowd of Montgomery County residents voiced their opposition to proposed Metrobus route cuts Monday night, as the County Council’s Transportation Committee hosted a town hall in downtown Silver Spring to hear public comments on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority’s planned operating budget for fiscal 2021.

The Eleanor to Open Silver Spring Location on Monday

The Eleanor, a bowling lounge, bar and grille, will open its second location at 931 Ellsworth Dr. on Monday, Feb. 24, company officials said at a preview event last night. Adam Stein, the managing partner and face of the ownership team, said he first got the idea for “a bowling alley that had elevated food and beverage offerings” when he was a student at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio.

Club Pilates to Open Silver Spring Studio

Club Pilates, a national boutique fitness studio, will open a Silver Spring location at 956 Thayer Ave. on the ground floor of the Thayer & Spring Apartments. The company is offering 20 percent off the cost of membership “forever” for the first 50 people who enroll. Potential clients also can sign up to reserve a free class.
