County Offering Matching Grants for Neighborhood Events

Montgomery County will again offer matching grants of up to $1,000 to help fund neighborhood events, according to an announcement from Silver Spring Regional Services Center Director Reemberto Rodriguez. Neighborhood organizations, block groups, tenant groups, civic groups and similar organizations are eligible to apply to help fund events and activities that “promote community engagement, encourage capacity building, networking and stimulate the local economy.”

Bill Would Create Public Police Advisory Commission

Thirteen members of the public would become part of a Policing Advisory Commission under the terms of a bill introduced by Councilmember Hans Riemer (D-At Large). A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow evening. In addition, the county executive’s office release the results of a survey asking the public about the characteristics they would like to see in the county’s next police chief.

Middle School Construction Forces Takoma Park Fireworks Cancellation

Construction at Takoma Park Middle School has forced the cancellation of the city’s Fourth of July fireworks show, according to the Takoma Park Independence Day Committee. Instead, the organizers have planned an evening block party on Maple Avenue in front to the Takoma Park Community Center with food trucks, activities for children, and live music.

Chamber Creates Award for Exemplary Selfless Service

The Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce has created a new award to recognize an individual who provides an exemplary example of selfless service. The Andrew Lee Service Beyond Self Award is named for the late Andrew Lee, son of Sarah and Bruce Lee, a former chamber chair, board member, and CEO of Lee Development Group in Silver Spring.

Golf Course Now Featuring Local Bands on Friday Nights

Sligo Creek Golf Course has begun featuring local bands playing on the patio in front of Sligo Pit Bar-B-Que on Fridays from 6-8 p.m. Tonight, Trainwreck will play. Later this summer, Marcus Johnson and the Nighthawks will play larger benefit shows on the lawn.
