The music director of WOWD Takoma Radio is bringing small, pandemic-safe live music shows to the area beginning this month.
The Sligo Creek Golf Course and a renovated Sligo Pit BBQ have reopened for the season and live music will return this year, according to team leader Laura Russell. The Friday night free concerts will kick off June 5 with The Loose Ends and a special appearance by County Executive Marc Elrich.
Please note that we have begun to receive notices that events previously listed on our calendar and in these weekly posts are being cancelled out of concern over the COVID-19 virus. Please check with the venue or organizers before heading out to be sure your chosen event is still being held. In the meantime, there is live music this weekend at the Takoma VFW and American Legion, as well as Seeker’s Church, and more groups playing on St. Patrick’s Day.
Plenty of local bands will be playing this weekend, with groups at the American Legion and Takoma VFW on Friday night, and garage rock Saturday night at the Legion. Also on Saturday, explore the music of Led Zeppelin with a band at Levine Music, while Potter Violins hosts fiddler Mari Black. On Sunday, the Silver Spring Library hosts a discussion on the history of lynching in the county, and on Monday, the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board will get a update on local construction and transit proposals.
AstroLab Brewing will host its first art show Friday night, while the D.C Blues Society has its monthly happy hour concert at the American Legion. Saturday, Scrum Con 2020 for role-playing and war game fans comes to the Silver Spring Civic Building. Opportunities for civic engagement include a WMATA town hall on Monday to discuss budget and proposed route changes, a workshop on proposed RideOn route changes on Tuesday, and a discussion of budgets and other issues affecting public parking in Silver Spring on Wednesday.
Seekers Church hosts a community sing Friday night, while Improbable Comedy brings a show to the American Legion on Saturday. Also Saturday, the Silver Spring Library hosts a conversation with Nigerian-American author Tope Folarin. Committees of the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board will get an update on Thrive Montgomery at a public meeting on Monday, while United Therapeutics hosts the county’s town hall on climate action next Thursday evening.
Saturday is your chance to meet a young kangaroo or wallaby at the Silver Spring Library. There’s also a record fair and later that day, a comedy show at Silver Branch Brewing Co. Presentations on microplastics in the Chesapeake and synthetic turf will be offered on Tuesday, while on Wednesday, the Long Branch Library hosts a talk on the local Underground Railroad.
This will be a great week for music lovers with live music three nights this weekend at the American Legion, a guitar concert tomorrow in Takoma Park, a symphony at Montgomery College, a master class and concert at Levine Music and a Valentine’s Day show at Carroll Café. There’s also comedy coming to Takoma Park, an event marking 100 years since women won the right to vote, and more.
Takoma Park’s Mid-Winter Folk Fest highlights the upcoming weekend. There are opening receptions this week for art exhibits at CREATE Arts Center and Locavino Café, as well as several events marking the beginning of Black History Month.
