Police Confirm Officer Shot This Morning Has Died

The county police officer that was shot in the Town Center garage this morning died from his wounds, Acting Police Chief Marcus Jones confirmed. Speaking at a press conference this afternoon, Jones identified the victim as Officer Thomas J. Bomba, a 13-year veteran of the department.

A county police officer was shot this morning in the Town Center garage at the corner of Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street, according to the department’s Twitter feed. “The injured officer called out on radio with disorderly subject in the parking garage at approximately 8:49 am and was located by a responding officer suffering from a gunshot wound,” the department posted.

Building at 900 Spring Not Historic, Planning Board Decides

The Planning Board yesterday declined to place a building at 900 Spring St. on the Locational Atlas and List of Historic Sites. The 5-0 vote rejected a staff recommendation to list the former headquarters of the National Sand & Gravel Association and National Ready Mixed Concrete Association, which opened in 1964.

It will be a busy weekend followed by a quiet week for local events. There’s live music Friday at the Sligo Creek Golf Course and the DC Blues Society 4th Friday Happy Hour at the America Legion, and a free concert Sunday at Montgomery College from the Washington Piano Society. Denizens will host a wild beer festival Saturday, while comedy returns to the Legion Saturday night. Also Saturday evening, Crossroads Market is hosting a special night market in Takoma Park.

State Gets Federal Approval for Georgia Avenue Redesign

The State Highway Administration has received federal approval to redesign the portion of Georgia Avenue from 16th Street to Forest Glen Road, officials announced. The work will include narrowing traffic lanes, adding a raised and landscaped median, sidewalks on both sides of the road and a two-way bike track on the west side of Georgia, along with a new traffic signal at Flora Lane.
