As the summer winds down and peak vacation season is here, community-oriented events slow down, too. This week features live music at the Sligo Creek Golf Course on Friday nights, a pop-up nursery at Astro Lab Brewing, an international food & craft fair on Veterans Plaza, and a bingo benefit at Denizens Brewing Co.
Gandhi Brigade Youth Media has settled into its new home at 900 Wayne Ave. and is operating under new Executive Director Anna Danielson. The group, which will be expanding its programming, will hold an open house in October.
The Greater Silver Spring Chamber of Commerce has created a new award to recognize an individual who provides an exemplary example of selfless service. The Andrew Lee Service Beyond Self Award is named for the late Andrew Lee, son of Sarah and Bruce Lee, a former chamber chair, board member, and CEO of Lee Development Group in Silver Spring.
Sligo Creek Golf Course has begun featuring local bands playing on the patio in front of Sligo Pit Bar-B-Que on Fridays from 6-8 p.m. Tonight, Trainwreck will play. Later this summer, Marcus Johnson and the Nighthawks will play larger benefit shows on the lawn.
Shepherd’s Table has appointed Manuel Hidalgo, an experienced executive in programs supporting socially and economically disadvantaged communities, as its new executive director, the organization announced. The core mission to combat hunger will remain, but Hidalgo also wants to look at options to ameliorate poverty.
The grand opening of District Taco in the Blair Park Shopping Center on East-West Highway will be held at noon Monday, July 1. A portion of the day’s profits will go to Level the Playing Field, a Silver Spring-based nonprofit that provides sports equipment to underprivileged youth in the area. The first 100 customers in line will receive a goodie bag and a free meal.
This week’s events feature several community meetings on school construction, the Purple Line and other topics, an online discussion with the county executive, film screenings, live music in several local venues and a Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts baseball game, among others.
The Silver Spring Civic Building was buzzing with activity this past Sunday. On the second level, the faces of the Silver Spring Time Bank volunteers greeted visitors. What wasn’t picked up in the exchange was donated to CREATE Arts Center.
Foulger-Pratt has signed its first tenant for Inventa Towers, the former Discovery headquarters building, according to a company press release.
