Koiner Farm in Silver Spring will be adding equipment this fall that will allow it to extend the growing season for certain crops, according to Kate Medina, founder and executive director of the Charles Koiner Conservancy for Urban Farming.
Not Your Average Joe’s restaurant in Ellsworth Place has permanently closed, according to an email sent to customers today (July 9) and forwarded to the Source. The message, signed by Peter D’Amelio, the company’s chairman and CEO, reads, “We have truly enjoyed being part of the Silver Spring community.”
The Hair Cuttery in Ellsworth Place has permanently closed, joining other salons shut down by its parent company even as others are preparing to reopen. Creative Hairdressers Inc. announced in January it intended to close more than 80 stores due to financial issues.

Employees and customers of certain retail outlets in the county are now required to wear face coverings during the COVID-19 emergency, according to a health order issued by Travis Gayles, M.D., the county’s health officer. The order, effective today (April 13), covers grocery stores, pharmacies and large chain retailers (“big-box” stores), as well as farmers markets.
Ellsworth Place officially opened a reconstructed indoor playground with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held in the ground floor space Feb. 20. The $300,000 project is the first in a number of upgrades planned for the mall in the next 12 to 18 months.
Don Pollo Peruvian Chicken is not coming to Ellsworth Place, contrary to what was previously reported elsewhere. However, Don Pollo—Pollo al la Brasa, will open in the space formerly occupied by Noodles & Co., according to Bryan Ramos of Retail22, who brokered the lease agreement with the mall’s owner, GBT Realty.
The Koiner Farm in downtown Silver Spring has been granted the county’s first conservation easement for urban agriculture. The easement, in partnership with the Maryland Environmental Trust, permanently protects the one-acre from ever being developed.
