The Old Takoma Business Association has launched a month-long Shop Small Saturdays campaign in conjunction with Small Business Saturday, which occurs this year on Saturday, November 28:
“We celebrate small businesses every day in Takoma, but want to especially encourage holiday shopping every Saturday during the month of November at Takoma’s Shop Small Saturdays,” said OTBA Executive Director Laura Barclay in an email provided to the Source. “Start your holiday shopping now – demand is higher, supply is down and small businesses continue to need your support. Stop by a local business, check out the website, or give a call – businesses are ready to help you shop. Gift cards also make great holiday gifts. Fuel your shopping at local restaurants. Whether you choose to dine in or take out, support Takoma’s restaurants this holiday season. Be sure to ask about family and holiday meal options. With over 100 locally-owned and operated small businesses, Takoma is the perfect place to find unique holiday gifts.”
According to Wikipedia, Small Business Saturday was first observed in the United States on November 27, 2010. Small Business Saturday was created as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick-and-mortar businesses that are small and local.
More information on Shop Small Saturdays, and a list of participating businesses, can be found on OTBA’s Main Street Takoma website.
