Takoma Park Receives State Grants to Support Redevelopment, Housing Opportunities

The City of Takoma Park has been awarded two state grants to support redevelopment and housing opportunities, according to a press release.

The Housing and Community Development Department was awarded a $500,000 revitalization award from the National Capital Strategic Economic Development Fund initiative.

This grant is for the revitalization of 6530 and 6600 New Hampshire Avenue, officials said.

“The revitalization project includes the acquisition and rehabilitation of the properties. The property at 6530 New Hampshire Ave., a highly visible but derelict 3-story commercial building,” the release reads.

The multi-phase project, built in partnership with a private developer, will include a state-of-the-art conference center and commercial-use building, as well as new construction to create housing units.

“This multi-phase project will be the first mixed-use development of modern times in the City of Takoma Park,” according to the release.

The second award is a $500,00 Affordable Homeownership Opportunities Fund grant. It will be used to acquire properties to develop affordable homeownership opportunities, helping to preserve such opportunities in the city.

In addition to the Takoma Park grants, the Montgomery Housing Partnership received $75,000 from the NCSEDEF to rehabilitate the facade of the historic Flower Theatre in Long Branch.

The NCSEDEF is designed to support redevelopment in communities in and around the Capital Beltway and awarded $4 million to 16 projects.
